The Story of My Life by Helen Keller - Reviewed by Ayodhika Ghosh (Autobiography Fest)

"The Story of My Life’ is an inspiring autobiography about Helen Keller, the late activist and lecturer. At nineteen months, she was left completely deaf and blind due to an unfortunate illness, replacing her bright and happy childhood with darkness and silence.

Written when she was just twenty two years of age, the autobiography tells the readers about the struggles she had to face as a visually impaired and deaf person. She often fell into fits of rage in her early childhood due to the frustration of not being able to communicate with those around her, until her teacher- Anne Sullivan came in her life. Miss Sullivan taught her through unique ways which were very effective, and over time, Helen finally learnt to communicate using signs, and could understand what others told her by reading their lips, She went on to study in prestigious universities like Harvard and Cambridge, becoming the first deaf- blind person to earn a bachelor’s degree in arts.

It definitely is a very inspiring book, especially as it helped raise awareness about Helen’s condition and the challenges faced by specially abled people like her. However, I found the book a little boring and repetitive at times. Despite being a good book, undoubtedly very well written, there wasn’t the spark in it to make it interesting for me.

Book rating- 7.5/10
