My family and other animals by Gerald Durrell - Reviewed By Arunabha De - (Autobiography fest)

Could you imagine yourself being an animal lover and finding yourself smack in the middle of your dreamland? The book “My family and other animals” is exactly what you think. It is an autobiography of the famous zoologist and writer, Gerald Durrell’s childhood. While you might imagine that just like any other autobiography, it will contain twists and turns like “Boy and Going Solo” by Roald Dahl, it does not. It specializes in descriptions vivid, full of life, such that you might sink into your sofa and start imagining yourself as being Mr. Durrell. While the start does not seem at all interesting, almost killing your interest like what happened to me, it builds up and become a story chock-full of adjectives used for the colour, the aroma of the teeny-weeny-tiny-winy-itsy-bitsy bits of life that most writers tend to forget about. There really isn’t much to say here – the book needs to be read and experienced by the reader himself/herself. Even though I don’t have any love for animals and insects at all [in fact I hate them so much that I always freak out in front of one, excepting if it is a picture or a GIF about an animal or such stuff], it really made me like them to an extent. The imagery about the island and other beautiful places really captures the reader as it has with me. It is a must read for both people who love visual imagery with vivid descriptions of places as well as autobiography lovers.
