Who wouldn't like to live in a hill station like Dehra and have a mouth-watering chaat at a bazaar? This story is the first novel of Ruskin Bond and surely lives up to his name. The story revolves around the main character Rusty, a young boy free spirited and lonely but amiable. Rusty was orphaned at an early age and was adopted by his uncle and aunt. He was scared of his guardians and even thought that he owned him in utter fear, he also hit Rusty oftenly including an incident when he saw Rusty coming from the bazaar . A scarred child ,Rusty, runs away from his house after he plays Holi with a new made friend Ranbir. He now started to believed that one can be happy even without that much money that the Europeans(His guardians) had. He then makes many good friends who were; Kishen, who was from a rich family yet loved to spend time in the bazaars and was very kind by heart, Ranbir who was the best wrestler in town and Suri who liked to blackmail people and lastly Somi, who became Rusty's "Best friend". The ending is unexpectedly sad and quite disappointing as Rusty at the end as he was left by all of his friends. In this story the main character Rusty, goes through all stages of his life along with the readers. But this story leaves me in pain as in it a young a boy tries to cope up with his life after all the obstacles hurled at him, but alas, his fate forces him to utter sadness and ignorance of others but as the amiable person he is, he still tries to make new friends. And lastly the glorified "Roof room" of Rusty, was the one in which he spent many sleepless nights and busy days ... and just stared intently at the world around him, to hide from his suffering and pain.
