This book is a prequel to the television show, leading up to Sabrina's dark baptism. There is a lot points of Sabrina the witch's character growth and some extra backstory you will not get from the television show that makes the characters even more well-rounded in the book. Various other parts of the story such as relationships between Sabrina and her family are highlighted more, and her relationship with Harvey goes on a bit of a rollercoaster.
The events in this book take place before the first season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the novel charts earlier days of Harvey and Sabrina's relationship, fleshes out the character of Harvey's brother, Tommy,and has Sabrina thinking with whether or not she even wants to be a witch. She thinks her family is so complicated because they are witches . But as she realises that Harvey has a less than perfect home life too, she begins to see that all families can be complicated, whether they be mortal or witch .
Other than the complications of a topsy turvy fantasy world.. Sabrina has to deal with various people in order to battle and search for her purpose as a witch. She has to fight with the main antagonist of the series Lucifer Morningstar.. and in this journey she learns to embrace her powers as a witch. The overall theme revolves around tense moments, adventure, fiction and romance. It is a good read but overall fails to emphasize more on thrill and adventures. Focuses more on sabrina developing as a character but in the end somehow seals the deal in providing thrill to the readers.
