The first Agatha Christie novel that I read was “After the Funeral”- this made me a great fan of the author. The murder of an innocent lady, the investigation across the English countryside by the renowned Hercule Poirot kept me riveted till the end.
‘After the Funeral’ was first published under the name of ‘Funerals are Fatal’ in 1953. It is a thrilling book about the savage murder of a foolish middle-aged woman named Cora Lansquenet. After she attends her brother’s funeral and remarks that he may have been murdered, she is found savagely murdered in her home the next day. Hercule Poirot, the renowned detective is called in to investigate the case by the family solicitor.
What makes the story extremely interesting is the way Poirot thinks and investigates to unravel the mystery. We get a detailed picture of Cora’s siblings and her nephews and nieces, and their way of living. Poirot uses his unique investigative skills in talking to the suspects and uses his “grey cells” to unravel the mystery. The end is indeed a surprise which I had not been able to predict at all!
The book is full of twists and turns, and the readers see the wonders of the world renowned Hercule Poirot’s sleuthing skills. ‘After the Funeral’ is undoubtedly one of Agatha Christie’s best books, and is definitely hard to put down.
